For the Future + 3D vs Content Frequency
over 8 years ago – Thu, Oct 08, 2015 at 04:17:42 PM

SpaceVR was started to give everyone the opportunity to experience the Overview Effect. One part of achieving that mission is to inspire kids to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields, so they can design the next Martian spaceships, habitats, and rockets.

Today we visited an all girls high school in Palo Alto, CA to answers questions about computer science, entrepreneurship, Virtual Reality, and space travel. These girls asked GREAT questions and explained why they joined the computer science focused STEMx club within their school.

Gwynne Shotwell, the COO of SpaceX puts it best, “We look forward to the day when a woman leading an aerospace company is no longer news” [1].

To that end and to support innovation in education in underserved schools, SpaceVR will be sponsoring four school libraries per year with free VR hardware and software. Space is the final frontier, and everybody should have a chance to be a part of exploring it and, in turn, being influenced by it. Vote your your school today at www.spacevr.co/vr-kids-program The TOP 4 vote getting schools will be selected, so keep voting until October 31, 11:59 pm PDT!

A few people have asked why the first stretch goal is communication downlinking and not 3D content. To put it simply, payload launch volume is extremely expensive, and to grow SpaceVR into scalable company that can reach the Moon and Mars, content is the king! A 3D VR camera is 150% larger than a 2D VR camera, requires on-orbit assembly, and uses a lot more battery power. It should also be noted that 3D movies still have not really taken off, and often make people sick. Every dollar towards our stretch goal will help bring more cool stuff down to the Earth. Last week we spoke to two amazing high bandwidth communication companies that charge by the hour (not a large set contract), thus we can slowly scale as funding allows. That being said we would love your feedback, since the customer is always right :) - VOTE HERE for 3D vs Content

Stretch Goal + Projects We Love

Dear VRnauts,

$100K gets us into orbit and if we meet our stretch goals we can do even more!

We set the goal at the minimum viable product level so that we could launch to the ISS and start capturing spherical 2D content, ensuring that the project has a place to start and can grow from there. Adding a communication downlink to the Overview One would accelerate the rate of SpaceVR content distribution from months to weeks! Taking it from content every 3 months via downmass of the storage drives to the ability to compress and downlink over the 3 megabit per second downlink offered to every NanoRacks NanoLab. This would allow us the capability to downlink one piece of content per week!

Let's work together to make this happen!

We're extremely appreciative and thankful for your support!

Today marks the dawn of a new age.

An age where we can explore the stars from the comfort of our homes.

In one fell swoop, you’ve proven the emergence of two tidal waves.

Space Technology and Virtual Reality.

Thank you so much everyone! We couldn't do it without the support of an amazing community!

We look forward to exploring together!

We are 93% funded - 54 hours to go
over 8 years ago – Tue, Oct 06, 2015 at 03:50:10 PM

Hello VRnauts,

As of now, we're over the 93% mark! We need another $7K and we'll be a live, fully funded project. We have 1,093 sponsors. Here's how we can get to the finish line:

1. Everybody contribute an extra $7. This will get us over our goal without the need for additional sponsors.

2. Ask a friend to contribute a minimum of $7. This will close the gap for those who can't contribute more themselves.

3. Post on Facebook or Twitter. One share is an average of 1000 friends. Let's send waves!

We're are so close! Once again, sincere thanks to all of you out there. Just 54 hours left!

Let’s push to the finish line!
